Gordon ‘Coogan’ Lawrence
‘Coogan’ joined the SWRSLSC in the mid 1940’s and gained his Bronze Medallion in 1946.
He was Club Captain for the seasons 1955/57 and 1964/66. In 1954 ‘Coogan’ was selected in the SLSNSW State Team to contest at the interstate competition at the Australian Championship Carnival which was held at Southport on the Gold Coast. At this event he was part of the R&R Team which won the Gold Medal at the Championships.
In his time of competition, ‘Coogan’ was one of the Club’s top surf swimmers and won many Surf Races, Surf Belt Races and Surf Team events at all levels of competition. He also represented the Club in numerous Mid North Coast Branch Teams.
December 2017 saw the launch of the Club’s very own tap beer ‘Lifesaver Lager’. The tap design incorporated an image of Coogan as a Belt and Reel competitor. This evening saw many past members, current members and supporters of the Club attend to celebrate.
